Kyrgyzstan to allow US base to stay
The Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan is allowing the US to keep an airbase near the capital for as long as it is needed for the continuing struggle in Afghanistan, but will probably not let the base stay any longer than necessary.
Discovery blasts off
After more than two years on the ground following the Columbia disaster, NASA finally sent a shuttle into orbit.

Lance wins and astonishing 7th Tour
Lance Armstrong must unquestionably be the athlete of the century for the incredible triumphs he has achieved, not the least of which is to beat cancer. Today he established himself as perhaps the best cyclist of all time with a seventh consecutive win of the world's most difficult sporting event, the Tour de France. Hopefully the renwed interest in professional cycling that Lance has created in the US will continue even though he is now retired. Congratulations also to fellow Team Discovery Channel rider Yaroslav Popovych, who won the white jersey of the best young rider.

Scotty's final transport
James Doohan, the actor who played Montgomery Scott on the original Star Trek TV series died on July 20th. It's sad to see the Enterprise lose this fine crewman. Doohan led a fairly remarkable life and in fitting tribute, some of his ashes will be sent into space.

Sugar Crash
A fun sugar-high game sent by Uncle Jack to illustrate the value of sugar in parenting.

We're home!
After a few days at the hospital, we are finally home. The first night went well and little Stella actually let us sleep about 3 hours in a row. She seems to be fine with her new environment although she doesn't have much to say about the colors we've chosen for her room. A little later today I should have more photos up, but for now I'm off to get some supplies.

Get some details and see the photos of our little star, Stella...

Helvetica vs. Arial
Play a game in the epic battle between the legitimately created font (Helvetica) and the ripoff version (Arial) "borrowed" by Microsoft for use in its operating system.

"You're in a bad spot here, Scott..."
White House Spokesman Scott McClellan ducks and bobs and otherwise avoids answering anything related to the Karl Rove leak, contradicting his own prior statements. This transcript of a press briefing is a textbook case of squirming out of anything resembling an answer.

Nothing to say about Rove
Bush apparently is relentless about chasing down suspected traitors and criminals, that is except when they are found within his own administration. He ignored questions about his closest advisor Karl Rove leaking the name of a CIA agent to a reporter. I wonder what the odds are of Rove being imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay?
Back in the yellow
Lance once again took back the yellow jersey finishing second in Stage 12.

Kyrgyzstan: Progress in Democracy
After a largely peaceful revolution in March, it seems as though Kyrgyzstan is setting itself back on track to achieving an actual democracy. Acting leader Bakiev is even talking of reviewing the need for a US military base in his country.

Due Date
O.K., so its July 9th. The due date. The date set in stone by a doctor many months ago. It seems like much longer than that. But nothing is happening. We're still just waiting. There are incessant questions from everyone we know. "So Julie's still pregnant?" "I bet she's tired of the heat, isn't she?" "Are you getting anxious for the birth?" "Does Julie feel the compulsive need to clean?" "Why haven't you had the baby yet?"
To everyone who wonders, when Julie is no longer pregnant, you won't have to ask. You probably won't even get a chance to ask. You will know because we'll tell you. We'll be very happy and relieved. Julie does feel like buying a vacuum though.

An Animated map of the growth of the United States
A brief history of the United States is shown through and animated map accompanied by narration. It is a nice summation of a couple hundred years of history in a very digestable size.

Lance is on top again
Lance Armstrong overtook the lead in this year's Tour de France after winning the fourth stage of the tour, the team time trial. Follow up to the minute reports from the field on the official Tour website.

What looks like a traitor and acts like a traitor?
Isn't blowing the cover of an active CIA agent an act of treason? Wouldn't this be a hangin' offense in Texas? Then why is "presidential" sycophant and chief hatchet man Karl Rove still a trusted advisor? Or did Bush's Brain act alone?

I'm a huge fan, but this site is a little crazy in my opinion..
