Assault on Public Broadcasting

Rick Steves of travel show notoriety on PBS has written eloquently in support of continued government funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The radical right is making a serious attempt to dismantle an institution that provides one of the few intelligent broadcast resources left to our society. The Republicans have seated a chair of the CPB whose intent is to dismantlle it from the inside. They seem to think that if there is any dissent or disagreement toward their very narrow point of view, then they are being discriminated against. They already run everything, the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government, not to mention the so called "liberal" media. Think about it, how many media outlets are owned by someone other than rich white conservatives with powerful connections to the administration. That's right, just public broadcasting because it is meant to serve the interest of the American people, not a corporation. As Rick Steves says, "I’ve long feared that someday genuine culture will be killed-off by commercial culture. Now it actually seems to be happening." Please contact your representatives in the house and the senate and let them know what a drastic mistake it would be to dismantle public broadcasting.

The Dead Dog Classic

An ittermittently held cult-status road racing event, the 17th running of the Dead Dog Classic is set to return this year on June 25-26 in Laramie, Wyoming. It's great fun for both participants and spectators. Julie was the bell lap girl during the criterium in 1994. Here is some historical perspective on the race and how it got its name.

Mountain Biking near Laramie, Wyoming

I was feeling a little nostalgic for the two-wheeled haunts of my college days, so with the help of Google, I located a somewhat dated but still informationally accurate site describing some of the trails. I still believe that southeastern Wyoming has some of the best mountain riding in the world. I'll have to make a trip up there before too long.

How can a Little Tampering Hurt?

Considering the abusive policies of the Bush administration, it should be no surprise that an ex-oil lobbyist has been watering down scientific research regarding climate change. For more on the moron, read the full article courtesy of the Guardian. Check out the Steve Bell cartoon inspired by the matter too.

Enchanted Stick

I've discovered that for some reason I have the ability to impart magical properties to any ordinary stick, at least as perceived by my dog Heidi. She usually pays no attention to the many sticks that we encounter walking through trees or in parks. But once I pick up a stick from the ground, she becomes mesmerized. She won't take her eyes from it and will chase it and remain fixated on it. I know many people experience something similar, but it is really amazing that Heidi will remember a specific stick. She will always retrieve the correct stick, even from within a pile of other similar sticks. Weeks or even months after playing with a specific stick, she will still prefer it to other, unused sticks. The only reason that we ever need to find news sticks is that she takes great satisfaction in ripping them into smaller and smaller bits until they are no more.
